Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
