Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.
