Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such drugs should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
